Tech skills are the new survival skills. Whether you're a TikTok master or still trying to figure out how to reset your Wi-Fi, one thing’s for sure—technology is here to stay. But let’s face it, not everyone in our community has equal access to the digital world, and that’s where we come in. This month, we're talking about how digital literacy can bridge gaps, create opportunities, and keep us all connected.

The Lesson: Tech Skills Are the New Survival Skills

We live in an era where knowing how to use technology can mean the difference between thriving and merely surviving. From job applications to telehealth appointments, everything is going digital. However, many in our communities, especially older adults and underserved groups, struggle with technology. Digital literacy isn't just about knowing how to use a smartphone; it's about empowerment, access to opportunities, and staying informed in a fast-paced world.

The digital divide—the gap between those who have access to technology and those who don’t—creates barriers to education, employment, and social connection. But by stepping in and offering support, we can make sure no one gets left behind.

The Action: Offer Digital Literacy Classes and Provide Access to Tech

Ready to turn the digital divide into a digital bridge? Here’s how you can take action:

  1. Host digital literacy workshops: Teach basic computer skills, internet safety, and how to use social media to stay connected.

  2. Set up tech support days: Create a “Tech Help Saturday” where volunteers assist community members with troubleshooting their devices.

  3. Crowdfund for tech donations: Collect used laptops, tablets, and smartphones to distribute to those in need.

  4. Partner with local schools and libraries: Work together to provide free Wi-Fi hotspots and tech training for students and seniors.

  5. Teach financial literacy apps: Show people how to use budgeting apps, online banking, and e-commerce platforms to manage their finances more efficiently.

The Critical Question: How Can Technology Connect Us Rather Than Divide Us?

Social media and technology have the power to unite us across generations and geographies. But they can also create isolation if not used properly. How can we ensure technology becomes a tool for inclusion rather than division?

How Digital Literacy Strengthens Community

  • Job opportunities: Learning tech skills opens doors to remote work and higher-paying jobs.

  • Education access: Students can thrive with better tools for virtual learning.

  • Health and safety: Online healthcare options can save lives and provide crucial resources.

  • Social connection: Video calls and social media help families stay close, no matter the distance.

Similarities and Differences in African American Culture

Historically, African American communities have been incredibly resourceful in adapting to new technologies, from the use of social media to amplify social movements to leveraging e-commerce to support Black-owned businesses. However, there remains a generational gap—older generations may prioritize face-to-face interaction, while younger ones thrive in the digital world. Bridging this gap means ensuring everyone feels confident and capable of using technology for empowerment.

Real Stories: When Tech Changes Lives

Take, for example, the story of a senior who learned to use video calls and reconnected with long-lost family members, or a young entrepreneur who used social media to launch their business from their living room. Technology, when used right, can be a game-changer.

Digital Access is a Right, Not a Privilege

As we work to bridge the digital divide, remember—access to technology and knowledge should be for everyone, not just a select few. Let’s work together to make tech empowerment a reality for our communities.

Time to roll up our sleeves and get tech-savvy—let’s make sure no one in our community is left in the digital dust!
